October 29 and 30

Learning Highlights: - completed our superhero mystery math - solved a pumpkin carving logic puzzle - learned about AM and PM - we wrote a safety/instruction guide after reading Scaredy Squirrel prepares for Halloween; students wrote guides such as "how to carve a pumpkin" or a "safety guide for sorting Halloween Candy" - we built catapults for chucking mini candy pumpkins out of craft sticks, elastics, and spoons (ask your student about what type of simple machine this is!) - we traded monster writing descriptions with a partner; partners drew using each other's then we conferenced with each other about how to improve our descriptions Halloween Costumes welcome tomorrow - no blood, weapons, or masks that cover the face Friday- No School (PD DAY)

October 28

Highlights - we worked on the math puzzle, some of us have solved the mystery!  - we learned about the 3 classes of levers and did an experiment where we had to build each class/label the fulcrum, load, and force - worked on descriptive writing Reminder:  - Students may where a costume on Thursday if they choose (no weapons or masks that cover entire face/head) - No School Friday

October 25

Today was a busy day filled with: - Terry Fox Reward Assembly - Mr. J and Mr. Wilson dyed their hair! - Mystery Suitcase Viewing and Writing (Ask your student) - A Community Walk - we got to sketch the Rocky Mountains - Buddy Time - we drew monsters together and read a book - Math Check In Upcoming: - Learning about levers and wrapping up our simple machines unit; next is devices that move! - Nonfiction Writing about Regions of Alberta - Finishing Calendar Math and Beginning Representing numbers to 10 000 - Field Trip to Heritage Park Nov. 6 (please return forms) We have been very hooked on our Math mystery this week. Lots of our resources/project ideas are bought and downloaded from a website called Teacher's Pay Teachers. Our class has a wishlist if you wish to donate, but please do not feel obligated. October 24

- we learned a bit about the badlands and dinosaur provincial park in social studies ! - we continued working on our superhero math mystery puzzle - we created a halloween bingo board and worked on our french books - we focused on au, aw, o spelling patterns (sauce, shawl, frost, caught) -New Book Orders Went Home today if ordering for Bootober must be turned in By Oct. 29 - All other orders due November 15. - Please return field trip forms if you have not already done so Halloween Dance Tomorrow Evening!

October 23

*Field Trip Forms went home today, please sign and return* - we began working on French Halloween/ Autumn Books - students must use an object, colour and number on every page of their book - we did a time to the minute assessment and talked about the many different ways to write the date - we began a math superhero code breaking mystery where we had to use rounding and adding skills, we will continue working to solve tomorrow using other skills - we are getting very close to the end of the City of Ember, ask me about the novel! * Our community walk scheduled for yesterday was canceled because Mrs. Campbell is away. We are rescheduling our walk for Friday! *

October 21

Happy Election Day! Today we ... - Practiced Telling Time to the Minute; please practice at home! - We are doing Fall/Halloween Themed Literacy Stations - Did research and took notes about the Grasslands Region of Alberta - Discussed the election as a current event (we did not discuss party policies) - Reviewed plural words with -ed (trampled, started, squabbled, chopped - creating these plurals should be a review from grade 2) *Please practice colour words in French :)

October 18

Weekly Highlights: - We researched and took notes on the Foothills Region of Alberta - We learned Halloween and colour words in French - We told time to the 5 minutes and are solving word problems using time (what time is 45 minutes past 2:20? - We reviewed Calendar Basics (years, decades, centuries) - We learned about wedges, inclined planes and screws in science - We celebrated Math Friday with Mrs. Mason's Grade 3 class by building 2 and 3 dimensional shapes out of loops of string - We studied the art of pointillism and artists Georges Seurat and Paul Signac's work. Students began their own pointillism art piece depicting the landscapes of the foothills and rocky mountains. - Thank you to everyone who came to Literacy Night!
